Glossary Unit 5

Mighty: having or showing might

Portrait: a representation of a person, esp. of the face

Rinse: to wash lightly, as by pouring water over as a final stage in washing

Purse: a woman's handbag or pocketbook.

Warehouse: a building for the storage of goods or merchandise

Beaver: a large rodent that lives in water, having webbed hind feet and a large flat tail.

Dam: a barrier to obstruct or control the flow of water, built across a stream or river

Refugees: a person who flees for refuge or safety, esp. to a foreign country, as in time of political trouble, war, etc.
Convict: a person found guilty of a crime and serving a sentence in prison

Chapter 1

Nightmare: a frightening or terrifying dream that produces feelings of great fear and anxiety.
Sewer: an artificial passage, usually underground, for carrying off waste water and refuse
Maid: a female servant
Butler: the chief male servant of a household
Tears filled her eyes: she was crying
Court: a place where legal justice is administered
Rings: a circular line or mark
Proud: feeling pleasure or satisfaction over something thought of as bringing credit or honor to oneself

Nappy: a diaper.

Tablecloth: a cloth for covering the top of a table
Buns: a round bread roll, plain or sweetened
Tray: a flat, shallow container, used for carrying or displaying articles
Icing: a sweet mixture of sugar, butter, and flavoring, used as a coating on cakes, cookies, etc.; frosting Moughts watered Grab: to seize suddenly, eagerly, or roughly;snatch
Overcrowd: to cause to have too many people in (a room, building, etc.);crowd or fill too much

Advice: an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action.
Straw: a single stalk or stem, esp. of a cereal grass
Scar: a mark left by a healed wound
Cheek: either side of the face below the eye and above the jaw
Lay awake- don't sleep
Relief: a feeling of comfort or ease caused by the ending or stopping of pain or distress
Trust: reliance on the goodness, strength, or ability of a person or thing;confidence

Chapter 5

Deck: a floorlike surface taking up one level of a hull of a vessel
Can it get any worse?
Drown: to die from being put under wáter
Sickness: a particular disease or malady
Gave her a black eye
Yard: the ground that is immediately next to, or that surrounds, a house, public building, etc
Fence: a barrier enclosing or surrounding a field, yard, etc., usually made of posts and wire or wood.

Chapter 6

Qualified: having the qualities, accomplishments, skills, knowledge, or credentials one needs for a job, function, position, office...
Temper: a state of mind or feelings;habit of mind;
Bruises: to injure by striking or pressing, without breaking the skin but causing a discolored spot to develop

Class with Jessie

Device: a thing made for a particular purpose, especially a mechanical or electrical invention

Glisten: to reflect a sparkling light or a faint, flickering glow, as a wet surface; shine

Graze: to touch or rub lightly in passing

Greedy: excessively or overly desiring wealth, possessions, etc

Skip: to move in a light, springy manner by hopping forward on first one foot then the other

Dumb: lacking intelligence or good judgment; stupid

Tought: hard to break

Tender: soft or delicate in substance

Regret: wish you had not done

Toll: a fee demanded by an authority for some right or privilege, as for driving along a road

Wrinkle: a small crease in the skin, as from aging

Crew: a nail-like metal fastener, having a thin end with a spiral groove and a head with a slot

Slip: to slide suddenly and accidentally, esp. so as to fall or go lower

Wasp: a slender winged insect with a narrow abdomen and a powerful Sting

Sneeze: to produce air or breath suddenly, forcibly, and loudly through the nose and mouth by involuntary action

Thick: heavy; not easily poured

Glossary Unit 3

Come in: to enter

Thick: heavy, not easily poured

Put out = extinguish

Break out: to begin or arise suddenly

Collapse: to fall, crumble suddenly

Trapped: an unpleasant situation from witch it is difficult to escape

Pipes: a tube or cylinder of metal or other material, used for carruing water, gas...

Murder: the unlawful killing of a person, especially when done deliberately

Attorney: a person legally appointed or empowered to act for another

Mugger: a person who mugs, especially one who assaults a person in order to rob him or her.

Burglar: a person who commits burglary; housebreaker

Hooligan: a  ruffian or hoodlum.

Hijacker: who takes control of a vehicle by force

Handcuffs: a metal ring that can be locked around a prisoner's wrist
